Problems & repairs

Why is my plaster cracking?

Quick answer

Plaster cracks for several reasons — a house settling (common in new-builds), plaster drying and shrinking, structural movement, or damp behind the wall. Fine hairline cracks are usually cosmetic and easily filled and re-skimmed; recurring or widening cracks can point to an underlying issue worth checking.

In more detail

Most cracks are harmless. New homes settle, and fresh plaster shrinks slightly as it dries, both of which leave fine lines that are simple to fill and skim over.

Cracks that keep coming back, run diagonally from corners, or are widening can indicate movement or a damp problem that needs addressing before re-plastering — otherwise the crack just returns.
