Timings & drying
How long does plaster take to dry?
Quick answer
A fresh skim is often touch-dry within a day or two, but plaster typically needs several days — and sometimes up to a couple of weeks for thicker work — to fully dry out before it's ready to paint. It depends on the thickness, ventilation, heating and the weather.
In more detail
Drying time isn't fixed. A thin finishing skim dries far quicker than a thick float-and-set build-up, and a warm, well-ventilated room dries faster than a cold, damp one in winter.
You'll usually see the plaster change from dark, patchy brown to an even pale pink as it dries. Wait until it's a uniform light colour all over — including around the edges and any deeper patches — before decorating.
We'll always advise on realistic timings for your specific job and conditions, so you know when it's safe to paint.
