Explained
What is lime plaster and when do I need it?
Quick answer
Lime plaster is a traditional, breathable finish used on older solid-wall and period homes. Unlike modern cement and gypsum, it lets moisture move through the wall instead of trapping it, which helps avoid damp and decay. It's the sympathetic choice for cottages, listed and heritage buildings.
In more detail
Older buildings were designed to breathe. Lime plaster and render allow moisture to pass through and evaporate, keeping the wall healthy.
Sealing a solid-wall period home with hard cement or gypsum is a common mistake — it traps damp, which then shows up as blown plaster, salts and decay. On these homes, breathable lime is almost always the right answer.
We work with lime for period, listed and conservation-area properties, using materials in keeping with the building.
