What's the difference between plastering and rendering?

Quick answer

Plastering is the finish for interior walls and ceilings — a smooth surface ready to decorate. Rendering is the coat applied to exterior walls to weatherproof and finish them. They use different materials suited to inside versus outside, but both are about protecting and finishing the surface.

In more detail

The simplest way to think about it: plaster is inside, render is outside. Interior plaster is designed for a smooth, decorative finish; exterior render is designed to shed water and stand up to the weather.

The materials differ too. Modern renders like silicone and monocouche are through-coloured and weatherproof, while interior finishing plaster is worked to a fine, paint-ready surface.

We do both, so whatever your walls need — inside or out — we can advise and quote.
