Can you…?
Can you plaster over artex?
Quick answer
Yes. Where the artex is sound, we skim straight over it to bury the texture and leave a smooth, flat surface. Where it's heavy, loose or unstable, we overboard it first and then skim. Some older textured coatings need careful handling, which we check before starting.
In more detail
Artex is one of the most common things people want gone, and skimming over it is usually the quickest route to a modern, flat finish — no swirls showing through the paint.
If the texture is very deep, flaking or not well bonded, overboarding (fixing fresh plasterboard over the top) gives a better, longer-lasting result than skimming alone. We'll advise which your ceiling or wall needs.
Some pre-2000 textured coatings can contain materials that need careful handling, so we always assess first and take the correct, safe approach.
